What happened
On December 26, 2025, at approximately 1630 CST, a Wag Aero Cuby, registration N437WT, was involved in an accident near Wimberley, Texas. The aircraft was being operated under 14 CFR Part 91 for personal use.
While the pilot was turning from the downwind leg to the base leg of the traffic pattern, the engine experienced an instantaneous and total loss of power. The pilot reported no prior indications or abnormalities preceding the failure. In response, the pilot pitched the aircraft for the best glide airspeed and prepared for a forced landing.
Before attempting a restart, the pilot verified that the fuel selectors were both in the "ON" position, the mixture was full rich, the carburetor heat was on, and the magnetos had been cycled. During the restart attempt, engine power was briefly restored for approximately 3 to 5 seconds before failing again.
Due to insufficient altitude to reach the initial intended landing site, the pilot selected a new landing area. The aircraft performed a forced landing in a clearing containing small cedar trees. The impact with several trees caused substantial damage to the left wing, though the aircraft came to rest upright. There were no injuries reported.
The investigation
Investigators recovered flight data logs from the aircraft's avionics. Both fuel tanks remained intact following the impact, with no fuel leaks observed. Each tank contained approximately one-third of its total capacity at the time of the accident.
