Cessna T303 strikes hangar during taxi test at Eulogio Sánchez Aerodrome

Casualties unknown • AERÓDROMO “eulogio SÁNCHEZ”, CL

A Cessna T303 veered off the taxiway and struck a hangar during a brake test, resulting in no injuries but significant aircraft damage.

What happened

On March 21, 2024, at approximately 16:45 local time, a Cessna T303 was taxiing toward runway 19 at the Eulogio Sánchez Aerodrome (SCTB). The aircraft, operated by a private pilot, was carrying four passengers at the time of the incident. While performing a routine brake test during the taxi maneuver, the aircraft unexpectedly veered to the right. This deviation caused the aircraft to collide with a hangar located near the "Golf" taxiway.

Despite the impact, there were no injuries reported among the pilot or the four passengers. The collision resulted in structural damage to the forward section of the fuselage (nose) and the right wingtip of the Cessna T303. The hangar also sustained damage to its side wall.

The investigation

DGAC Chile investigators conducted a physical inspection of the aircraft, the taxiway, and the surrounding environment. The investigation focused on the mechanical state of the aircraft's ground steering and braking systems. During the examination, investigators noted that there were no visible skid marks or hydraulic fluid leaks on the taxiway surface.

Upon testing the aircraft's braking system, investigators discovered that the left brake failed to maintain pressure when engaged.

Probable cause

The failure of the left brake to maintain pressure during a brake test caused the aircraft to deviate from its taxi path and strike a hangar.
