What happened
On September 1, 2024, at approximately 14:00 local time, a SkyWalk Join’t 3 paraglider was performing a landing maneuver in the Las Vizcachas area of Puente Alto, Metropolitan Region, when it struck the terrain. The aircraft, an unpowered ultralight, was carrying a pilot and one passenger. The impact resulted in serious injuries to both occupants, specifically involving the spinal column. Both individuals were wearing protective helmets and were transported to medical facilities by ground.
The investigation
DGAC Chile investigators examined the aircraft, the flight conditions, and the pilot's credentials. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held a valid unpowered ultralight license with approximately 300 total flight hours. The aircraft, a 2023 model, was found to be in good condition, with no damage to the canopy, lines, or harness, and it was within its required inspection interval. The total takeoff weight was estimated at 161.5 kg, well within the certified range of 100 to 200 kg.
While meteorological conditions were generally suitable for visual flight, investigators noted reports of turbulence near the slope. Furthermore, a witness observed a sudden change in wind direction during the operation. The investigation also noted that the aircraft's identification and control documentation was not properly registered with the DGAC at the time of the event.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was the loss of flight configuration due to turbulence or catabatic wind, which induced a stall during a right-hand turn.
- A sudden shift in wind direction contributed to the instability of the paraglider during the landing phase.
- The pilot and passenger sustained serious spinal injuries as a result of the impact with the ground.
