What happened
On January 12, 2025, at approximately 11:00 local time, a non-motorized ultralight paraglider was involved in an aviation occurrence in the city of Iquique, Tarapacá Region. The flight, which was being conducted for recreational purposes, originated from the Alto Hospicio area with a planned landing at Playa Brava. During the flight, the aircraft struck overhead electrical cables located at the intersection of Avenida Ramón Pérez Opazo and Francisco Vergara.
The impact resulted in one injury to a passenger, while the pilot remained uninjured.
The investigation
DGAC Chile authorities are currently in the preliminary stages of the investigation, focusing on the collection and analysis of evidence. Investigators are examining the flight path and the circumstances surrounding the contact with the power lines to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the collision.
