What happened
On June 27, 2010, a Cessna 172N departed from Augsburg Airport for a sightseeing flight carrying the pilot and three passengers. During the landing phase at approximately 14:12, the aircraft approached runway 07 with a significant left sideslip and a right-wing drop. Video footage from a passenger recorded the aircraft approaching the runway threshold at a high angle of attack, accompanied by the continuous audible stall warning.
Upon contact with the runway, the aircraft's main landing gear left skid marks indicating it crossed the runway at a 45-degree angle. The aircraft bounced briefly before veering onto the grass strip on the northern side of the runway. The aircraft traveled approximately 250 meters through the grass before striking the airport perimeter fence and flipping onto its back in an adjacent cornfield. The impact resulted in four minor injuries and heavy damage to the aircraft, as well as damage to the airport fence and surrounding field.
The investigation
The BFU examined the aircraft's condition and the pilot's actions following the accident. Investigators found that the throttle was set to full power and the landing flaps, which were at 30 degrees during the approach, had been retracted. The propeller blades were bent backward, and the ignition switch was in the
