Runway Excursion Involving Overweight Paradise P1 LSA in Brazil

Casualties unknown • VILA VELHA, ES, BR

An experimental aircraft experienced a loss of control during a go-around at João Monteiro Aerodrome, resulting in substantial damage due to exceeding maximum weight limits.

What happened

On January 21, 2018, a Paradise P1 LSA, registration PU-FSZ, was performing a private flight from Guarapari (SNGA) to Vila Velha (SIVU) in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The aircraft was carrying a pilot and one passenger.

During the landing phase at João Monteiro Aerodrome, the pilot experienced difficulty controlling the aircraft, resulting in three touchdowns on the runway. In an attempt to execute a go-around, the pilot increased engine power; however, the aircraft yawed to the left. This caused the aircraft to veer off the left side of the runway, resulting in substantial damage to the airframe. Both occupants of the aircraft were uninjured.

The investigation

CENIPA investigators examined the aircraft's weight and balance configuration and the pilot's flight planning. The investigation confirmed that the pilot was properly licensed and rated for the aircraft type, and held a valid medical certificate. The aircraft also possessed a valid Certificate of Flight Authorization (CAV).

Analysis of the aircraft's weight revealed that the total weight at the time of the accident was 648.8 kg. This included the basic weight of 386 kg, 115 liters of fuel (8ting 82.8 kg), the pilot (100 kg), and the passenger (80 kg). This total exceeded the manufacturer's maximum recommended landing weight of 600 kg.

Investigators also noted that the elevator trim was set to its maximum deflection to counteract a pitching moment, suggesting that the Center of Gravity (CG) may have been outside of operational limits. The investigation also considered the possibility of improper control inputs or errors in pilot judgment during the go-around maneuver.

Findings

  • Inadequate flight planning, as the aircraft was operated beyond its maximum weight limits.
  • Uncertain application of flight controls during the maneuver.
  • Uncertain pilot judgment during the landing and go-around sequence.

Probable cause

The aircraft was operated in excess of its maximum recommended landing weight, which likely caused the Center of Gravity to shift outside of operational limits and contributed to the loss of directional control during the go-around.
