What happened
On July 3, 2010, a private PIPER PA-28-161 was performing a local flight departing from Mutxamel aerodrome (Alicante) with a pilot and one passenger on board. During the final approach to runway 12, the aircraft's left wingtip struck a 5-meter-tall street light located approximately 300 meters from the runway threshold.
The impact caused the aircraft to lose altitude and control. Recognizing that the aircraft could no longer reach the runway and seeking to avoid a steep terrain drop-off further ahead, the pilot attempted to land on the adjacent Monegre road. During this maneuver, the aircraft struck a second street light and two traffic signs. The impact with the second pole was severe enough to penetrate the right side of the cabin, damaging the floor and seat structure.
To mitigate the risk of fire upon impact, the pilot disconnected the magnetos and the master switch before touching the ground. The aircraft came to a halt near the aerodrome's perimeter fence. The pilot sustained minor injuries, while the passenger suffered serious injuries and required medical evacuation by helicopter.
The investigation
The CIAIAC examined the wreckage and the flight path, confirming that the left wing's lower surface and the horizontal stabilizer sustained significant damage consistent with the collision with the first light pole. The investigation also analyzed the sequence of ground impacts, noting that the aircraft dragged a large traffic sign and that the nose gear was broken during the slide.
Meteorological data from the Alicante area indicated stable atmospheric conditions with good visibility and moderate winds, making significant weather-related flight path deviations unlikely. The investigation also assessed the aircraft's maintenance records, finding that the PIPER PA-28-161 was up to date with its 100-hour inspections.
