Piper PA-28RT-20T Emergency Landing Results in Substantial Damage

Casualties unknown • JAURU, MT, BR

An unauthorized pilot performing an emergency landing in Mato Grosso, Brazil, caused substantial damage to a Piper aircraft after a loss of engine power.

What happened

On March 24, 2016, a Piper PA-28RT-20T, registration PR-JGA, was operating a private flight from Cáceres, MT, to Pontes e Lacer to transport personnel. The aircraft was carrying one pilot and two passengers. While flying near Jauru, MT, the pilot experienced a loss of engine power.

In an attempt to land safely, the pilot targeted a landing strip at Fazenda Araçatuba. During the flare, the pilot realized the landing gear had not been extended. In an attempt to execute a go-around, the aircraft overran the runway limits and collided with a termite mound in an open field. The aircraft sustained substantial damage, though all three occupants escaped without injury.

The investigation

CENIPA investigators learned of the accident 24 hours after the event via an anonymous tip. The investigation revealed that the aircraft was removed from the crash site without the authorization of the SIPAER investigating authority. Furthermore, the investigation found that the individual operating the aircraft did not possess a valid pilot license or a valid Medical Certificate (CMA). While the aircraft's Airworthiness Certificate was valid, its annual maintenance inspection had expired on February 8, 2016.

Probable cause

The accident was driven by a loss of engine power and the pilot's failure to extend the landing gear, compounded by the fact that the operator was unlicensed and the aircraft was operating with an expired annual maintenance inspection.
