What happened
On March 31, 2023, a Montaer MC01 light-sport aircraft, registration PS-DFF, was conducting a private flight from Sinop, Mato Grosso, to Aragarças, Goiás. Upon arriving at the Aragarças Aerodrome (SJVO), the pilot initially planned a visual approach for runway 28 but subsequently landed on runway 10.
Following the touchdown, the pilot initiated a go-around procedure. During this maneuver, a wind gust occurred, prompting the pilot to apply excessive back-pressure on the control column. This action caused the aircraft to enter a stall, leading to a loss of control in flight. The aircraft subsequently collided with a perimeter wall at the aerodrome, resulting in substantial damage to the airframe. The pilot sustained minor injuries.
The investigation
CENIPA investigators confirmed that the pilot was properly licensed and held a valid medical certificate. The aircraft's airworthiness certificate was also valid, and the aircraft was within its weight and balance limits. Meteorological data from nearby stations indicated that weather conditions were well above the minimums required for the flight, and wind speeds were within the operational limits specified in the aircraft's manual.
During the investigation, it was noted that certain required documentation, including aircraft logbooks and maintenance records for the engine and propeller, were not available for inspection. However, no technical failures were reported regarding the aircraft's mechanical condition.
Findings
- Improper control inputs: The pilot applied excessive pitch-up command during the go-around.
- Pilot judgment: There was a potential error in judgment regarding the timing of flap retraction in relation to airspeed and altitude.
- The combination of excessive pitch and possible rapid flap retraction likely induced a stall and subsequent loss of control.
