What happened
On April 28, 2019, a Paradise ultralight aircraft, registration PU-PPY, departed from an unregistered airstrip in Espigão D’Oeste, Rondônia, bound for the Redenção Aerodrome (SNDC) in Pará. The flight was a private operation carrying a pilot and one passenger.
The aircraft failed to arrive at its destination. The last known contact with the occupants occurred at approximately 1/30 PM (UTC) while flying over Peixoto de Azevedo, Mato Grosso. During this time, the passenger made a video call to a family member; no issues or flight abnormalities were reported during the communication. Following the failure to arrive, search operations were conducted but were eventually suspended on May 29, 2019, after the aircraft was officially declared missing. No information regarding aircraft damage or injuries to the occupants was available.
The investigation
CENIPA's investigation focused on establishing the facts surrounding the flight and the status of the crew. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held a valid Recreational Pilot Certificate (CPR) and an Advanced Ultralight (UATE) rating, along with a valid medical certificate. The aircraft owner stated that all required documentation, including the logbook and aircraft maintenance records, were on board the aircraft at the time of the disappearance.
Additionally, it was noted that the aircraft was carrying 40 liters of Avgas intended for refueling at the destination. Due to the lack of new evidence that could contribute to the prevention of future accidents, the investigation was formally interrupted in accordance with Brazilian federal regulations.
