Bird strike during takeoff causes agricultural aircraft to overshoot runway

Casualties unknown • PIROLÃNDIA, GO, BR

A Cessna A188B agricultural aircraft sustained substantial damage after striking multiple birds during a takeoff roll in Perolândia, Brazil.

What happened

On May 9, 2019, at approximately 20:30 UTC, a Cessna A188B agricultural aircraft, registration PR-TGR, was performing a takeoff roll from a private landing strip at Fazenda Raio de Sol in Perolândia, Goiás. The aircraft was being operated by Savana Aero Agrícola Ltda. for the purpose of aerial application of agricultural inputs.

During the takeoff run, the aircraft collided with a flock of birds. In an attempt to maintain the takeoff, the pilot jettisoned the aircraft's cargo. However, the loss of performance prevented the aircraft from achieving sufficient lift. Consequently, the aircraft overran the end of the landing strip and came to a stop within a nearby cornfield. The pilot was uninjured, but the aircraft sustained substantial damage.

The investigation

CENIPA investigators examined the aircraft and the surrounding area, finding physical evidence consistent with a bird strike. Investigators collected ten biological samples, including feathers, tissue fragments, and blood, from various parts of the aircraft, such as the right wing leading edge, ailerons, flaps, windshield, and the propeller spinner.

DNA analysis of these samples identified three specific bird species involved in the collision: the Toco Toucan (*Ramphastos tocorum*), the Crested Caracara (*Caracara plancus*), and the Southern Lapwing (*Vanellus chilensis*). Additionally, investigators located an animal carcass on the side of the landing strip. The investigation determined that this carcass acted as an attractant for scavengers and other fauna, specifically birds that feed on insects and small rodents attracted to the site.

Findings

  • The presence of an animal carcass near the runway infrastructure contributed to the attraction of local fauna to the area.
  • The collision with birds during the takeoff roll caused a critical loss of performance.
  • The pilot was fully qualified, with valid medical and aeronautical certifications, and the aircraft was in a proper state of airworthiness and weight/balance.

Probable cause

The collision with birds during the takeoff roll, which was likely caused by the presence of an animal carcass attracting fauna to the airfield infrastructure, led to a loss of performance and the subsequent runway excursion.
