What happened
On July 23, 2020, at approximately 17:30 UTC, an amateur-built Feeling biplane, registration PU-RKL, departed from the Matheus Lopes Maia da Silva Aerodrome (SSSM) in Itamarati, Amazonas, Brazil. The aircraft's intended destination was unknown at the time of the investigation. During the flight, the aircraft experienced a loss of control and collided with the ground in a densely forested area. The wreckage was located by individuals in the vicinity of the crash site.
The investigation
The CENIPA investigation established that the weather conditions at the time of the accident were favorable for flight. The aircraft, a single-engine experimental amphibious biplane with retractable tricycle landing gear, was manufactured in 2005. The investigation focused on the airworthiness of the aircraft and the qualifications of the person operating it.
Investigators found that the operator failed to present essential documentation, such as a valid medical certificate, insurance policy, or maintenance records. Consequently, the investigation concluded that the aircraft was not in an airworthy condition. Furthermore, the individual operating the aircraft did not hold any valid license or certificate issued by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), meaning they were not legally qualified to fly the aircraft.
Findings
- The pilot sustained serious injuries.
- The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
- The pilot was unqualified to operate the aircraft.
