What happened
On June 22, 2019, an amateur-built Echo P92S, registration PU-DMR, was performing a local flight at the Clube de Marte Ibirá de Pára-quedismo (SWYV) in Ibirá, São Paulo. The aircraft was carrying a pilot and one passenger.
During the approach to runway 30, the pilot encountered a strong left crosswind gust, prompting the decision to execute a go-around. During the execution of this maneuver, the aircraft experienced a right yaw and subsequently collided with a hangar located near the side of the runway. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft, while both occupants sustained light injuries.
The investigation
CENIPA investigators confirmed that the pilot held valid medical and flight certifications, including ratings for land-based fixed-wing sport aircraft. The aircraft, a private experimental model, possessed the necessary experimental airworthiness certificates (CME and CAVE).
Meteorological data from the nearby São José do Rio Preto airport indicated favorable flying conditions, with no significant weather activity or hazardous wind conditions reported in the region at the time of the accident.
However, the investigation noted several data gaps regarding the aircraft's operational limits. The investigators were not provided with the aircraft's flight manual, which would specify operational limitations such as maximum crosswind components, nor was a weight and balance record available. Consequently, it could not be verified if the aircraft was operating within its prescribed weight and balance limits or if its specific operational constraints were being respected during the flight.
