Fatal Aerobatic Training Accident Involves Unqualified Pilot and Instructor

Casualties unknown • CAMPINA GRANDE DO SUL, PR, BR

An American Champion 8KCAB crashed during an aerobatic training flight in Paraná, Brazil, resulting in two fatalities and highlighting significant regulatory and training irregularities.

What happened

On December 2, 2001, an American Champion 8KCAB, registration PP-KDY, departed from Bacacheri Aerodrome in Paraná, Brazil, for a scheduled aerobatic training flight. The aircraft was carrying the pilot and one passenger. Approximately 30 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft entered a nose-down attitude and collided with the ground near Highway PR 506 in Campina Grande do Sul.

At the time of impact, the engine was found to be producing no power. Evidence at the scene suggested the pilot may have been attempting an emergency landing, as the magnetos and battery were turned off and the throttle was reduced. However, the aircraft struck the terrain with a high rate of descent, leading to two fatalities and the total destruction of the aircraft.

The investigation

CENIPA's investigation revealed a series of systemic failures regarding training and oversight. While the pilot held a valid private pilot license, he lacked the specific qualification required for aerobatic flight. Furthermore, the instructor providing the training was also not properly qualified for aerobatic instruction. The investigation noted that the flight school operated under an informal culture where performing aerobatic maneuvers without proper certification was a shared practice among the group.

Technical discrepancies were also identified, including the absence of manufacturer manuals for the aircraft at the aeroclub and inconsistencies in maintenance logs. The investigation established that the pilot's lack of experience in this specific aircraft type, combined with inadequate instruction, likely hindered his ability to manage the emergency situation effectively.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by the pilot's lack of proper aerobatic qualification and inadequate training, compounded by an organizational culture that permitted unauthorized flight maneuvers and lacked proper instructional oversight.
