What happened
On June 6, 2013, at approximately 10:20 UTC, a Lavisa PA-25-235, registration PT-OQZ, was performing an agricultural spraying mission in the municipality of São Vicente Ferrer, Pernambuco. The aircraft had departed from an improvised landing strip in Vicência to apply pesticides over a banana plantation located at Sítio Aurora.
While flying on a magnetic heading of approximately 320 degrees, the aircraft struck an unmarked low-voltage power line spanning a valley. The impact caused the aircraft to strike the ground, initially impacting with the left wing. The aircraft came to a rest approximately 90 meters from the point of the wire strike, with its nose pointing toward a heading of 183 degrees. The pilot sustained light injuries, and the aircraft suffered substantial damage.
The investigation
CENIPA investigators examined the wreckage and the flight path to determine the sequence of events. The investigation confirmed that the pilot was fully qualified with valid medical and technical certifications. The aircraft was also found to be in an airworthy condition and within weight and balance limits at the time of the accident.
Upon inspecting the wreckage, investigators found that the fuel tanks were empty. A small puncture was discovered in the left wing tank, caused by the ground impact, which allowed the remaining fuel to drain. The investigation also noted that the terrain in the region is characterized by rugged hills and small valleys. The pilot was experienced in the area and was aware of the presence of power lines and the inherent risks posed by the local topography.
Findings
- The aircraft struck a low-voltage power line that was not marked or signaled.
- Inadequate flight planning contributed to the occurrence.
