What happened
On August 11, 2015, a Beechcraft BE 17, registration PR-STW, was performing a ferry flight from Itirapina, SP, to Amarais Aerodrome (SDAM) in Campinas, SP. The purpose of the flight was to transport the aircraft for its annual maintenance inspection to restore its airworthiness. The flight was operating under a Special Flight Authorization issued by ANAC, which strictly prohibited the carriage of passengers or cargo.
Upon landing at Amarais, the pilot lost control of the aircraft during the landing roll, deviating from the runway centerline. The aircraft exited the side of the runway, causing the right main landing gear to collapse. The right lower wing subsequently struck the ground, leading to a ground loop. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the engine, propeller, landing gear, and right lower wing. The pilot and one passenger, who was on board in violation of the flight authorization, were uninjured.
The investigation
The investigation established that the pilot lacked the necessary training and qualification to operate the Beechcraft BE 17. While the pilot held a valid private pilot license and single-engine land rating, there was no record of instruction for this specific model. The pilot had only flown the aircraft once previously, 41 days prior, in a non-command capacity.
Furthermore, the investigation found that the aircraft's airworthiness certificate was suspended, and the maintenance logs for the airframe, engine, and propeller were outdated. The investigation was noted as being focused on the fact that the operation was in direct violation of established aeronautical regulations.
