What happened
On December 5, 2000, at approximately 16:25, a Mudry CAP 10, registered F-GDTO, departed from the Til-Châtel aerodrome for a session of vertical aerobatic training. About five minutes later, the aircraft struck the ground approximately 500 meters south of the airfield.
A witness observing the aircraft from a nearby road reported seeing the plane flying at a low altitude. Due to the low light conditions, the witness could not determine if the aircraft was departing or arriving, but noted that the plane suddenly pitched toward the ground while performing a roll before disappearing from view.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the configuration of the aircraft at the time of impact and the mechanical state of the engine. Investigators found that the flaps were extended to 15 degrees, the fuel selector was closed, and both the battery and electric pump were switched off. Additionally, the canopy release device was partially deployed (one-third out). This specific configuration suggested that the crew was likely preparing for an emergency landing.
Technical examinations of the engine revealed no malfunctions that would justify such a maneuver. Environmental factors were also considered; while visibility was good, the wind was gusty (10 knots from 180°, with gusts up to 24 knots), and the sun had set shortly before the accident, creating challenging lighting conditions.
Findings
