Embraer EMB-810C Excursion After Landing in Manoel Urbano

Casualties unknown • MANOEL URBANO, AC, BR

An Embraer EMB-810C aircraft veered off the runway and struck an embankment in Acre, Brazil, resulting in substantial damage but no injuries.

What happened

On October 19, 2014, at approximately 20:05 UTC, an Embraer EMB-810C, registration PT-EVN, was performing a private transport flight from Santa Rosa do Purus, AC, to Manoel Urbano, AC. The aircraft was carrying a pilot and four passengers.

The pilot reported feeling a yawing motion immediately prior to rotation during takeoff. However, during the flight, no abnormal conditions were observed, and all aircraft systems appeared to be functioning correctly. The meteorological conditions were favorable for visual flight rules (VFR).

Upon landing at the Manoel Urbano Aerodrome, the aircraft began to drift toward the right side of the runway. The pilot attempted to mitigate the impact by cutting the engines before the aircraft struck a natural embankment located 14 meters from the side of the runway. While the aircraft sustained substantial damage, all five occupants escaped the incident without injury.

The investigation

CENIPA's investigation focused on the sequence of events following the landing and the legal status of the flight crew. Investigators examined the aircraft's airworthiness and the pilot's credentials. While the aircraft's Certificate of Airworthiness was valid and the weight and balance were within manufacturer limits, the investigation could not verify the maintenance logs for the airframe, engines, or propellers because the technical publications were not on board.

Crucially, the investigation identified that the pilot was operating with both a suspended Medical Certificate and a suspended Technical Rating (MLTE) following involvement in a previous accident earlier that year.

Probable cause

The pilot was operating the aircraft without valid medical or technical certifications, and lacked the necessary qualifications and experience for the intended flight.
