What happened
On December 15, 2013, at approximately 20:30 UTC, a Cessna 182P, registration PT-KGT, was performing a private flight approaching Tupi Paulista Airport (SDTI) in São Paulo, Brazil. During the final approach, the aircraft, which was being commanded by the co-pilot, experienced a sudden left wing drop. The pilot then took control of the aircraft and increased engine power in an attempt to execute a go-around. Despite these efforts, the aircraft lost control and struck the ground violently outside the airport perimeter. The impact caused substantial damage to the airframe, and both occupants sustained serious injuries.
The investigation
CENIPA's investigation focused on the flight sequence and the regulatory status of the crew. Investigators examined the mechanical condition of the aircraft and found no identified factors that would have rendered the flight controls inoperable. The investigation also scrutinized the legal standing of the individuals on board, revealing significant regulatory non-compliance regarding pilot licensing and medical certification.
