What happened
On May 22, 2002, at 18:15 UTC, an Embraer EMB-810C (registration PT-RQE) was performing a private passenger flight from Belo Horizonte (SBBH) to Campos (SBCP). During the takeoff roll, the pilot noticed engine issues. Due to insufficient runway remaining to abort the takeoff, the pilot continued the departure.
Shortly after liftoff, the pilot attempted to return to the runway by initiating a low-altitude turn, first to the right and then to the left. During this maneuver, the left engine failed. The aircraft lost lift and collided with an open field. The impact caused substantial damage to the aircraft, and the pilot and two passengers sustained serious injuries.
