What happened
On October 3, 2007, a Cessna 182B, registration PT-BEX, performed a landing on a grass runway at Fazenda Três Irmãos, located in Terra Rox and near the municipality of Terra Roxa, Paraná. The aircraft executed a long landing, which resulted in the plane overrunning the end of the runway. Upon exiting the runway limits, the aircraft rolled over. Following the excursion, the fuselage was consumed by fire. While the pilot was rescued and the cargo removed, the investigation noted that the aircraft was found in a state suggesting it had been intentionally set on fire by individuals on the ground before they fled the scene.
The investigation
CENIPA was notified of the occurrence by the Civil Police of Terra Roxa. The investigation examined the physical evidence at the site, including the marks left on the ground, which were consistent with a long landing. Investigators also reviewed the aircraft's regulatory status and found that the Certificate of Airworthiness had been suspended since September 2005, and the last recorded annual maintenance inspection had expired in August 2005. Due to evidence suggesting an intentional criminal act (arson) related to the causality of the event, the investigation was interrupted in accordance with Brazilian regulations.
