Embraer EMB-712 Neiva Overruns Runway at Carlos Prates Aerodrome

Casualties unknown • BELO HORIZONTE, MG, BR

A flight training aircraft overran the runway at Carlos Prates Aerodrome in Belo Horizonte, resulting in substantial damage to the engine, propeller, and landing gear.

What happened

On May 26, 2012, an Embraer EMB-712 Neiva, registration PT-NYV, was performing a ferry flight from Pampulha Aerodrome (SBBH) to Carlos Prates Aerodrome (SBPR) for flight instruction purposes. Upon landing on runway 09, the aircraft traveled the entire length of the runway and exceeded the boundaries of the opposite threshold.

The aircraft exited the runway and came to rest in a decline located beyond the runway end. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the propeller, engine, landing gear, left wing, and horizontal stabilizer. The pilot was uninjured during the event.

The investigation

CENIPA investigators determined that the total length of the runway at SBPR was 928 meters. The investigation established that the aircraft touched down 350 meters after the threshold of runway 09. At the point of touchdown, there were 578 meters of runway remaining, which was considered sufficient distance to bring the aircraft to a stop within the runway limits.

However, the investigation found that the pilot intended to vacate the runway at intersection "D," the final intersection. Consequently, the pilot delayed the application of braking until the final 150 meters of the runway. Additionally, the runway surface was found to be wet at the time of the occurrence, which impacted braking effectiveness.

Findings

  • Pilot judgment regarding the timing of braking.
  • Delayed braking application, which began only 150 meters before the end of the runway.
  • The presence of a wet runway surface during the landing.
  • The aircraft's landing position left sufficient runway remaining, but the late braking prevented a safe stop.

Probable cause

The primary cause of the runway overrun was poor pilot judgment regarding the timing of braking, compounded by the reduced braking effectiveness caused by a wet runway surface.
