What happened
On July 30, 2011, a Stinson 108-2, registration PT-LCH, departed from the Ipuã Gliding Center airfield in Caçapava, São Paulo, for a local flight. The aircraft was carrying a pilot and one passenger. During the flight, meteorological conditions deteriorated, making it difficult to maintain visual flight rules. Consequently, the pilot decided to perform a precautionary landing at the Atibaia Aerodrome (SDTB).
Following the landing, while taxiing on the runway, the right main landing gear wheel entered a ditch located on the right side of the runway. This excursion caused the right wing to strike the ground and led to the collapse of the right landing gear leg. The aircraft sustained light damage, but both occupants escaped the incident without injury.
The investigation
The investigation examined the flight sequence, the aircraft's airworthiness, and the airfield infrastructure. It was confirmed that the pilot held valid technical and medical certifications and possessed sufficient experience for the flight. The aircraft, which is registered as a historical aircraft with ANAC, was operating within its authorized flight radius and was in compliance with weight and balance requirements. Maintenance records for the airframe, engine, and propeller were found to be up to date. The investigation also noted that the aircraft was removed from the scene without prior authorization from the investigating authority.
