What happened
On 04 November 2013, a Boeing 767-36N/ER, registered CN-RNT, arrived at Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport from Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, Morocco. The aircraft, operated by Royal Air Maroc as Flight RAM206, was carrying 243 passengers and 8 crew members.
After landing on Runway 06 left and taxiing to gate 61, the aircraft came to a halt at 16:41. Shortly thereafter, at 16:45:20, a fire ignited under a belt loader that a ground employee was moving into position beneath the left aft cargo door. As smoke from the blaze entered the passenger cabin, the captain initiated an emergency evacuation. Passengers exited the aircraft via both the boarding bridge and the evacuation slides.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the origin of the fire and the subsequent impact on the aircraft and passengers. Airport firefighting services responded to the scene at 16:49:50 and successfully extinguished the flames. The investigation established that the fire was linked to a specific mechanical issue within the ground equipment.
