Bombardier Global Express strikes runway lights at Montréal/St-Hubert Airport

Casualties unknown • Montréal/St-Hubert Airport, Quebec, CA

A Bombardier Global Express aircraft operated by Zetta Jet USA Inc. struck temporary runway edge lights during landing at Montréal/St-Hubert Airport in May 2017.

What happened

On 15 May 2017, a Bombardier Global Express, registered as N888ZJ, was performing a flight from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey to Montréal/St-Hubert Airport in Quebec. The aircraft was operated by Zetta Jet USA Inc. and was carrying one passenger and three crew members.

During the landing phase at approximately 1055 Eastern Daylight Time, the aircraft touched down on Runway 06L. At the time of the incident, the runway's dimensions had been restricted due to ongoing construction, leaving a surface only 5000 feet long and 75 feet wide. As the aircraft landed, it drifted partially outside the intended boundaries of the narrowed runway, resulting in the collision with seven temporary runway edge lights located to the left of the pavement. The pilot was able to realign the aircraft with the reduced-width centerline, eventually coming to a halt roughly 300 feet before the end of the shortened runway. The impact caused substantial damage to the aircraft, though there were no injuries to the occupants.

The investigation

The investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the landing and the impact with the temporary lighting equipment. Investigators examined the operational environment, specifically the modified runway dimensions and the placement of the temporary lights. The inquiry also reviewed the flight preparation and planning processes used by the crew prior to arrival at Montréal/St-Hubert.

Probable cause

Inadequate flight planning regarding the modified runway conditions led to the aircraft striking the temporary edge lights.
