What happened
On July 8, 2018, a Champion 7GC46 aircraft, which was equipped with floats, departed from Deer Lake in West Nipissing, Ontario. The aircraft was carrying two people at the time of the flight. During the flight, the aircraft was seen flying at a low altitude along the edge of the lake. While following the perimeter, the aircraft's nose pitched upward and a wing dropped, causing the aircraft to enter a spin. The plane subsequently struck wooded terrain in a steep, nose-down position. The impact triggered a fire, and both occupants were killed.
The investigation
The TSB conducted a Class 4 investigation into the crash. The investigation focused on the flight path of the aircraft and the sequence of events leading from the low-altitude flight to the impact with the trees.
