A single-occupant Mosquito XE helicopter crashed into a power line and struck the ground near Winters Aire Park Airport, resulting in the pilot's death.

What happened

On 15 July 2018, a Mosquito XE helicopter, operated privately, was conducting a flight in the vicinity of Indus/Winters Aire Park Airport, Alberta. The aircraft was being operated by a single pilot. While the helicopter was traveling along the Highwood River, it struck a power line at an altitude of roughly 75 feet above the ground. Following the contact with the wires, the aircraft crashed onto the river bank. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft and caused one fatality for the pilot. No fire occurred following the crash.

The TSB conducted a Class 4 investigation into the event. The investigation focused on the sequence of events leading to the contact with the electrical infrastructure and the subsequent impact with the terrain.
