A training flight involving a DTA Voyageur II ultra-light ended in a fatal crash near a Quebec aerodrome in May 2019.

What happened

On the evening of 24 May 2019, a DTA Voyageur II ultra-light aircraft was performing flight training maneuvers at the Saint-Cuthbert, Quebec (CCU2) aerodrome. The flight was being conducted by an instructor and a student-pilot. During the session, the crew performed several local touch-and-go maneuvers.

At roughly 20:00 EDT, the aircraft departed for another maneuver but struck the ground in a field located next to the runway. The impact resulted in two fatalities. The aircraft was completely destroyed in the accident.

The TSB conducted a Class 4 investigation into the event, which focused on the circumstances surrounding the aircraft's contact with the terrain during the takeoff phase.
