What happened
On 16 June 2019, a Pitts S2E aircraft, operated privately, was involved in a fatal accident near Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. The aircraft was performing a flight with two people on board, consisting of a pilot and a passenger. Shortly after departing from the airfield, the aircraft struck the terrain. The impact resulted in one fatality and one person sustaining serious injuries. The aircraft suffered substantial damage during the collision.
The investigation
The TSB conducted a Class 4 investigation into the event. This type of investigation is limited in scope and focuses on the immediate circumstances surrounding the occurrence. The investigation examined the sequence of events leading from the takeoff to the moment the aircraft impacted the ground.
