What happened
On 12 September 2016, a Denney Kitfox Mk 2, registered G-BSUZ, was conducting a private flight at Brimpton Airfield in Berkshire. The aircraft, powered by a single Rotax 582 piston engine, was being operated by a pilot undergoing conversion training.
During the approach to Runway 25, the aircraft experienced a series of unstable movements upon touchdown. The pilot reported that the aircraft bounced during the landing phase, which subsequently led to a porpoising motion. This sequence of events caused the aircraft to overturn. Both the pilot and the single passenger sustained minor injuries, and while the aircraft suffered substantial damage, both occupants were able to exit the aircraft through the doors without further incident.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. Investigators reviewed the circumstances surrounding the landing and the flight profile of the aircraft, which had been recently acquired by the pilot for the purpose of type-specific training.
