What happened
On 14 April 2017, a Denney Kitfox Mk 3, registration G-DJNH, was engaged in a training flight at Eshott Airfield in Northumberland. The flight was being conducted to practice go-around procedures. During the fourth attempt at a go-around, the student pilot applied full power immediately after touching down on the runway. Following this application of power, the aircraft began to drift toward the right side of the runway.
The instructor on board permitted the takeoff attempt to proceed. However, the aircraft subsequently left the confines of the runway surface, became airborne, and struck a group of trees. The weather conditions at the time were reported as fine with a light headwind. There were no injuries to the two crew members on board, though the airframe sustained impact damage.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. The inquiry focused on the sequence of events during the fourth go-around attempt and the aircraft's deviation from the runway centerline. The investigation established that the aircraft's movement to the right occurred as a result of the power application during the transition from touchdown to a climb.
