What happened
On 6 August 2017, a Magni M24C Orion gyrocopter, registration G-MSGI, was performing a private flight from Oakley Airfield in Buckinghamshire. Shortly after departing and reaching an altitude of approximately 50 feet, the aircraft's Rotax 914-UL engine ceased operation.
With the runway no longer available for a standard landing, the pilot attempted to turn into the wind to the right, aiming for a taxiway. During the landing sequence, the aircraft bounced upon contact with the ground and subsequently rolled onto its left side. The impact caused damage to the tail, the propeller, and the rotor. The pilot, who was secured by a full harness, sustained minor injuries consisting of bruising to the legs.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the sudden loss of engine power and the circumstances surrounding the refueling process prior to the flight. Investigators examined the fuel used in the aircraft, noting that the pilot had recently purchased unleaded fuel and transferred it into an older metal jerry can.
While refueling, the pilot noted that the fuel colour appeared unusual. Although he performed a flammability test on a small sample and determined it to be combustible, he proceeded with the refueling. Post-incident reflections by the pilot suggested that the fuel may have been contaminated, leading to the engine failure. Additionally, the investigation looked into the pilot's handling of the aircraft during the emergency landing, specifically regarding airspeed management.
