What happened
On 26 September 2015, a Pegasus Quantum 15, registration G-BZWU, was performing a training flight when an incident occurred during its arrival at Maypole Airfield, Kent. The pilot, a student, was conducting his initial solo cross-country flight from Rochester.
During the first approach on the downwind leg of the circuit, the pilot observed a tractor performing grass-cutting operations on the runway. To avoid the vehicle, the pilot initiated a go-around. The subsequent second circuit proceeded without further incident, and the aircraft completed a normal touchdown, though slightly left of the runway centerline.
As the aircraft continued its ground roll, the right wheel appeared to lock. This caused the aircraft to swing sharply to the right, eventually tipping over onto its left side. While there were no injuries to the pilot, the aircraft sustained significant damage to the propeller, wing, pended, and front strut.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. Investigators examined the sequence of the landing and the behavior of the landing gear during the rollout.
