What happened
On 12 August 2016, a Pitts S-1S Special, registration G-PARG, was performing a private flight at Gloucester Airport. While on final approach to Runway 22, the aircraft encountered surface winds from 240° varying between 210° and 280°, with speeds of 12 kt gusting to 22 kt. Upon touchdown, the aircraft experienced a bounce and subsequently began to yaw to the left.
In response to the unstable touchdown, the pilot initiated a go-around procedure by applying power. However, as the aircraft climbed to an estimated altitude of 30 ft, it banked sharply to the left. This maneuver resulted in the wingtip making contact with the ground. The aircraft eventually came to a halt in an almost inverted position. The pilot sustained minor injuries and was able to exit the cockpit without assistance.
The investigation
Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the touchdown and the subsequent climb. The investigation noted the weather conditions at the time, specifically the gusty wind conditions present during the approach. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's actions during the transition from the bounced landing to the attempted go-around.
