Forced landing of Rans Coyote II near Andreas Airfield

Casualties unknown • Near Andreas Airfield, Isle of Man, GB

A private flight involving a Rans S6-ESD XI (Modified) Coyote II resulted in a forced landing on the Isle of Man after an engine failure.

What happened

On 21 April 2015, a Rans S6-ESD XI (Modified) Coyote II, registration G-MZBV, departed from Runway 11 at Andreas Airfield for a private flight. Approximately four minutes into the climb towards the coast, the pilot experienced a reduction in engine power.

In an attempt to return to the airfield, the pilot initiated a turn; however, the engine ceased functioning entirely midway through the maneuver. While attempting to restart the engine and switching fuel tanks, the pilot directed the aircraft toward Runway 29. Realizing the airfield was unreachable, the pilot selected a nearby field for an emergency landing. During the approach, the pilot failed to account for the high sink rate of the aircraft, causing the main landing gear to strike a tall hedge at the edge of the field. This impact forced the aircraft into a nose-down attitude upon touchdown.

There were no injuries to the two occupants, though both were able to exit the aircraft without difficulty.

The investigation

The investigation examined the mechanical state of the aircraft and the circumstances of the engine failure. Post-accident inspections were conducted to determine if fuel contamination or supply issues had contributed to the loss of power. These checks indicated that such issues were unlikely.

Technical examinations of the ignition system revealed that there were no sparks being produced from either magneto. The specific cause for this lack of ignition was not determined during the investigation.

Probable cause

The engine failed due to a loss of ignition from both magnetos, and the subsequent forced landing resulted in a collision with a hedge because the pilot did not sufficiently anticipate the aircraft's high sink rate.
