What happened
On 15 February 2012, a Cessna 172P Skyhawk, registration G-BITM, was conducting a flight when it experienced a sudden and significant reduction in engine power during the cruise phase. Upon recognizing the loss of power, the pilot identified a suitable field to attempt an emergency landing. However, during the approach to the chosen site, the aircraft struck trees located near the edge of the field. This impact caused the aircraft to stall, leading to a subsequent drop into the intended landing area.
The investigation
Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the engine failure and the subsequent flight path. The pilot's initial assessment suggested that the primary reason for the power loss was likely a restriction within the engine's fuel supply. The investigation focused on the mechanical state of the aircraft and the sequence of events leading from the initial power loss to the impact with the trees.
