What happened
On 18 May 2018, a Reims Cessna FR172K (registration G-YIPI) was conducting a private flight when it experienced a significant landing incident at Perranporth Airfield in Cornwall. During the approach to Runway 05, the pilot maintained an airspeed of approximately 70 kt with full flaps, while the wind was recorded at 8 kt from 360°.
As the aircraft crossed the runway threshold, the pilot initiated the flare. This resulted in a heavy touchdown followed by a bounce. The impact caused substantial damage to the forward section of the aircraft, specifically affecting the propeller and the nosewheel. Following the event, the pilot identified the damage and promptly vacated the runway to shut down the engine.
The investigation
The investigation examined the circumstances surrounding the touchdown and the physical damage sustained by the Reims Cessna FR172K. Investigators reviewed the pilot's report and the state of the aircraft upon landing. The assessment focused on the flight parameters at the time of the incident and the mechanical consequences of the impact.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained severe damage to the nosewheel and propeller, rendering the airframe damaged beyond economic repair.
- The pilot indicated that the flare may have been performed too late.
- The investigation noted that the nature of the damage suggested the possibility that the aircraft may have been traveling at an excessive speed, potentially causing a nosewheel-first touchdown.
