What happened
On 16 January 2024, a Rotorsport UK Cavalon, registration G-CLDV, was conducting a training flight near Breedon Holt, Norfolk. The flight was intended as a mock General Flying Test for a student pilot who had not flown for approximately six weeks. After completing various aerial manoeuvres, the instructor directed the student to simulate an engine failure to practice a forced landing.
During the descent, a discrepancy emerged regarding the intended landing site. While the instructor expected a straight-in approach, the student intended to turn toward a different field to take advantage of the wind. At approximately 400 ft, the student initiated a 90-degree right turn, which placed the flight path over a wooded area. Concerned by the proximity of the trees, the instructor ordered a go-around at an altitude of roughly 300 ft.
During this manoeuvre, the aircraft failed to clear the treeline. The instructor reported that the student applied only partial power and pulled the control column back, while the student maintained that full power was applied. The Rotorsport UK Cavalon struck the edge of the trees and fell to the ground, resulting in the destruction of the aircraft. The student sustained serious injuries, while the instructor suffered minor injuries.
