What happened
On 22 September 2017, a Thruster T600T 450 JAB, registered G-BZTD, was involved in an accident during a training flight at Membury Airfield, Berkshire. The pilot, who possessed a National Private Pilot’s Licence and had limited experience on this specific aircraft type, had intended to conduct the flight alongside an instructor. However, as no instructor was available upon arrival, the pilot proceeded with a solo flight.
During the initial circuit, the pilot was forced to perform a go-around after observing another aircraft positioned near the runway edge. On the subsequent landing attempt, the aircraft bounced upon touchdown. In response to this bounce, the pilot applied full power to initiate a second go-around. During this maneuver, the aircraft veered toward the left, resulting in it departing the runway and striking trees.
There were no injuries to the pilot. The aircraft sustained structural damage, including a distorted left main wheel and a bent right main wheel suspension.
The investigation
The investigation examined the circumstances surrounding the pilot's solo decision and the sequence of the landing attempts. Evidence from the pilot's report and witness accounts indicated that the aircraft experienced a ground loop during the incident. The pilot noted that the lack of instructor supervision during the flight may have contributed to the outcome.
