What happened
On 5 June 2016, a Tiger Cub 440, registration G-MMIH, was being operated for a private flight near Huddersfield. After completing pre-flight checks and a successful engine run-up, the pilot commenced a takeoff to perform several circuits. The aircraft climbed to approximately 500 feet before the pilot initiated a 180-degree turn to establish the downwind leg.
Upon completing the turn, the engine began to lose power. The engine's RPM dropped from a normal maximum of 5,200 to approximately 2,500. The pilot attempted to use the manual backup fuel pump and adjusted the throttle, but the power loss persisted.
As the aircraft descended to roughly 400 feet, the pilot identified a landing site at Crosland Heath Golf Club. While attempting to land on a fairway, the pilot observed golfers on the intended path and maneuvered the aircraft toward rough ground to avoid them. The aircraft struck the ground heavily and rotated to the left. The pilot sustained one serious injury to his back.
The investigation
Investigators examined the engine and various components, including the fuel pump and the gascolator. The inspection revealed no evidence of mechanical failure or malfunction within these systems. The weather at the time of the incident was noted as humid with a temperature of approximately 12°C. It was noted that the engine configuration on this specific aircraft type lacks a provision for carburettor heat.
