What happened
On 10 August 2023, a TL-3000 Sirius 600, registration G-SBOI, was performing a private flight from Fishburn Airfield in County Durham to Blackpool Airport. The aircraft was carrying one pilot and one passenger. The pilot chose to utilize Runway 26, which has a slight upward gradient, as the wind conditions were calm and the runway aligned with the flight path.
During the takeoff roll, the pilot noted that while the engine sound and RPM indicated full power was being applied, the aircraft's acceleration along the runway was noticeably impaired. Despite this lack of performance, the takeoff attempt proceeded. The aircraft briefly lifted off the surface but settled back onto the runway twice, eventually becoming airborne much later in the runway length than expected. Once in the air, the aircraft failed to gain airspeed, and the stall warning horn sounded continuously. At an altitude of approximately 10 to 15 feet, the aircraft rolled to the left and struck the ground, resulting in extensive damage to the airframe. Both occupants sustained minor injuries.
The investigation
The AAIB examined the circumstances surrounding the loss of performance. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft's weight and center of gravity were within permitted limits and that the engine appeared to be developing full power based on the RPM indicator and audible engine sounds. The investigation noted that the damage to the wreckage was significant enough to make exiting the aircraft difficult for the occupants.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced a significant lack of acceleration during the takeoff roll.
- The specific cause for the poor engine performance was not established.
- The aircraft reached a very low altitude before the impact occurred.
