What happened
On 28 September 2017, a Gaz’Aile 2 microlight, identified by the number 17TA, was performing local aerodrome circuits at Saint-Jean-d’Angély. During the third takeoff from runway 10, the aircraft experienced a significant loss of engine power during the initial climb following a touch-and-go maneuver.
In response to the power loss, the pilot attempted a left U-turn to return to the runway. During this maneuver, the aircraft lost altitude and collided with the ground near the threshold of runway 28. The impact was followed by a fire that destroyed the aircraft. The pilot was fatally injured in the accident.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the propulsion system and the flight path taken following the engine failure. Witnesses reported hearing the engine splutter and go silent, noting what appeared to be an attempt to restart the engine before the aircraft turned and descended.
Examination of the wreckage was constrained by the fire that occurred upon impact. Investigators found that the mechanical reduction gearbox showed damage consistent with an axial load from front to rear caused by the ground impact, but no fractured components were found within the engine unit itself. The investigation was unable to determine the specific cause of the engine power loss.
Findings
- The engine likely suffered a loss of power during the initial climb.
- The pilot's decision to execute a low-altitude turn-around to reach the runway contributed to the loss of control.
- The aircraft's speed was rapidly affected by the reduction in power, leading to the subsequent impact.
