What happened
On May 9, 2021, a Pipistrel Virus SW 121, registration G-OVSI, was performing a cross-country flight from the United Kingdom to Slovenia. While approaching Albert-Bray aerodrome in France, the pilot decided to alter the landing sequence to save time. Instead of touching down at the threshold of runway 27, the pilot chose to fly at a low altitude along the paved surface, intending to touchdown further down the runway to minimize the distance required for taxiing to the parking area.
During this low-altitude flight along the runway, the aircraft encountered crosswind conditions. The aircraft's speed decreased significantly, and the flight path became unstable, characterized by roll excursions. The aircraft eventually struck the ground approximately 150 meters from the runway centerline, resulting in the destruction of the aircraft and injuries to the pilot.
