What happened
On 04 July 2020, a Stampe SV-4 aerobatic biplane, registered F-PTTL, departed from Angers-Marcé aerodrome for an advanced aerobatic training session. Before takeoff, the crew notified the AFIS officer of their intention to perform maneuvers above 2,500 ft AMSL, noting that a glider winch launch was simultaneously in progress.
Approximately ten minutes into the flight, while the aircraft was north of the designated aerobatic zone, it entered a left-hand spin. Witnesses observed the aircraft descending in a nearly vertical path before colliding with a field. The impact resulted in two fatalities, involving both the pilot and the instructor, and the total destruction of the aircraft.
The investigation
The BEA examined the aircraft' and the flight environment. The investigation confirmed that the Stampe SV-4 was in a suitable weight and balance configuration and that the engine was operating at the time of impact. The flight control linkages and control surfaces were found to be fully functional, and no structural anomalies were identified in the wreckage.
Investigators also reviewed the meteorological conditions, noting an overcast cloud layer at 2,200 ft AGL. While the crew had intended to remain above 2,500 ft AMSL, witness statements indicated the aircraft remained below the cloud layer throughout the flight. The investigation also looked into the medical history of the instructor and the potential for in-flight incapacitation.
