Runway Excursion Involving Piper PA-28-140 at Vallentuna Airfield

Casualties unknown • Accident with an aircraft of the type Piper PA28-140 at Vallentuna flygfält, SE

A single-engine aircraft failed to stop on the runway during landing at Vallentuna, resulting in an excursion across a road.

What happened

On 7 July 2017, a Piper PA-28-140, registration SE-FDE, was performing a local flight near Vallentuna airfield. The pilot, the sole occupant of the aircraft, was attempting to land after a 30-minute flight. During the final approach, the pilot encountered an excessive sink rate and responded by increasing engine power. During this period, a gust of wind caused the aircraft's groundspeed to increase while the engine remained at high power settings.

As a result of these conditions, the aircraft touched down 600 meters past the runway threshold at a high speed. The aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently before reaching the end of the runway. The aircraft exited the runway, crossed a nearby road, and eventually came to a stop in a field on the opposite side of the road. The pilot was uninjured and evacuated the damaged aircraft following the incident.

The investigation

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) examined the sequence of events leading to the touchdown and the environmental conditions at the time of the accident. The investigation focused on the aircraft's flight path, the pilot's corrective actions regarding the sink rate, and the impact of wind conditions on the landing speed and touchdown point.
