What happened
On 9 June 2004, an Acrosport 1, registration G-BTWI, was performing a private flight at Stoney Farm, near Blackwell, Bromsgrove. The approach to the grass runway was conducted in calm, windless conditions. The pilot executed a touchdown at the aircraft's stall speed, which was consistent with normal operating procedures.
During the landing roll, the aircraft began to drift toward the left side of the runway. As the aircraft moved off the prepared surface, the left wing made contact with long grass located adjacent to the runway. This contact caused the aircraft to veer sharply further to the left, resulting in a nose-over maneuver that left the aircraft resting in an inverted position. There were no injuries to the pilot.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. The examination established that the aircraft sustained damage to the propeller, tailplane, and left wing. Following the impact, the pilot successfully followed safety protocols by switching off the master switch and the magnetos before exiting the cockpit.
