Agusta Bell 206B rotor strike during repositioning at Weymouth

Casualties unknown • Morn Farm, Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset, GB

An Agusta Bell 206B helicopter sustained significant damage after the main rotor struck the ground during a low-altitude hover in Dorset.

What happened

On 4 January 2002, an Agusta Bell 206B, registration G-OFCH, was being repositioned on a landing pad at Morn Farm, Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset. The aircraft was operating as part of a private flight. While the pilot was maintaining a hover at an altitude of approximately 2 feet, the helicopter experienced a sudden roll to the right. This movement caused the main rotor blades to make contact with the ground.

Upon impact, the engine and rotor blades ceased operation immediately. The aircraft came to rest on its right side. The pilot, who sustained minor injuries, was able to exit the cockpit by maneuvering through the area of the front windscreen.

The investigation

The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot and further inquiries conducted by the AAIB. Investigators noted that the pilot estimated a surface wind of approximately 8 knots originating from the left side of the aircraft at the time of the incident. The aircraft, which was manufactured in 1973, was determined to be damaged beyond economic repair.

Probable cause

The cause of the sudden rightward roll and subsequent rotor strike remains undetermined, though the aircraft was operating in a 2-foot hover with an 8-knot wind from the left.
