Boeing 737 Overruns Runway at Changi Airport

Casualties unknown • SG

A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-400 veered off the paved surface at Singapore Changi Airport after the crew failed to decelerate sufficiently for a planned taxiway exit.

What happened

On 6 October 2003, a Boeing 737-400, registration 9M-MQK, arrived at Singapore Changi Airport from Kuala Lumpur on a scheduled passenger flight. While the aircraft was cleared to exit the runway via Taxiway W9, the crew was unable to slow the aircraft sufficiently to make the turn. In an attempt to remain on the paved surface, the pilot attempted to steer onto the adjacent, non-operational Taxiway W10.

During this maneuver, the aircraft departed the pavement at the intersection of the runway and Taxiway W10, coming to a stop in soft ground approximately 50 meters from the runway. All 145 passengers and 7 crew members were evacuated safely through a forward door via a mobile step, with no injuries reported. The incident resulted in damage to the aircraft's engine and landing gear, as well as damage to airfield lighting and cables.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to slow down sufficiently for a planned exit because the crew did not implement full braking and reverse thrust in a timely manner, compounded by a lack of situational awareness regarding their position on the wet runway.
