What happened
On August 25, 2018, a Piper PA22 150, registration OY-DMY, was involved in an accident during a local flight departing from Viborg Airport (EKVB). The flight was being conducted under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) for private purposes.
Following a routine engine warm-up, the pilot taxied the aircraft to the threshold of runway 29. Upon applying full power for takeoff, the pilot pulled back on the control stick, causing the aircraft's nose to rise. This rotation partially obstructed the pilot's forward visibility. During this phase, the aircraft drifted to the right. Before reaching the runway intersection, the left elevator struck a runway marking (an elephant foot). This impact caused the aircraft to veer to the left.
In response to the deviation, the pilot retarded the throttle to idle to abort the takeoff. As the aircraft continued its movement, the left main landing gear and the underside of the fuselage struck two additional runway markings and a runway edge light before the aircraft came to a complete stop. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
The investigation
The Danish Accident Investigation Board conducted an initial safety investigation. The inquiry examined the sequence of events, the aircraft's flight path, and the physical damage sustained. The investigation confirmed that the accident occurred in daylight under visual meteorological conditions (VMC) with light winds from the south. The investigation concluded after reviewing the report forms and conducting interviews, determining that no further safety investigation was required.
