Engine Glider Stalls During Landing at Skive Airport

Casualties unknown • Skive(EKSV), DK

A Scheibe SF25C motor glider experienced a sudden stall and hard landing at Skive Airport following a wind gust during the landing rollout.

What happened

On October 13, 2018, a Scheibe - SF25C motor glider, registration OY-NAX, was performing a private flight under visual flight rules (VFR) at Skive Airport (EKSV). During the landing phase on runway 14, the aircraft was in the process of the landing rollout at a speed of approximately 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.

At this moment, the pilot encountered a wind gust that caused the aircraft to lift off the ground again. As the aircraft reached an altitude of roughly 4 to 5 meters, it entered a stall. The pilot was unable to implement corrective maneuvers in time, resulting in a hard landing on the runway. There were no injuries reported following the event.

The investigation

The Danish Accident Investigation Board conducted an initial safety investigation based on the reporting forms, photographic evidence, and interviews. The investigation established that the wind conditions at the time were approximately 190 degrees at 10 knots, with gusts reaching up to 15 knots. Following the preliminary assessment, the Board decided not to pursue further investigation steps.

Probable cause

A wind gust during the landing rollout caused the aircraft to lift off the runway, leading to an aerodynamic stall at a low altitude.
